May your Internet Explorer burn in hell
BY DERRICK SOBODASH
his new site design does not work in Internet Explorer 6. It does not work in that browser at all. It might work in Internet Explorer 7, but I have neither it nor a Microsoft Windows install with which to test.
For those not familiar with Interweb history, the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 browser was release in mid-2001. The browser contained few updates except light touch-ups to the CSS core of Internet Explorer 5, which was released in early 1999.
Think about that for a moment.
Internet Explorer has always been the bane of all Web designers. In 2006 when I briefly worked for a Web development company here in Beijing, my coworker handed me the most amusing pie chart ever. The chart diagrammed how much time Web designers spend on each phase of page design. A staggering 48% of the time was allocated to “Making it work in Internet Explorer.”
If you still use Internet Explorer 6, shame on you for being part of one of the Internet’s greatest barriers to progress. Its update has been available, cracked if needed, for more than a year, and better alternatives have been available for nearly a decade.
Internet Explorer in total claims a market share of less than 35 percent of all CinnamonPirate.com and related sub-domain traffic. Even by the latest professional estimates, Internet Explorer 6 carries an Internet market share of slightly more than 20 percent.
Do your part and help phase the clunker out.
I feel as much need to maintain compatibility with such an unpopular and outdated browser as I do with NCSA’s Mosaic browser and its limited support for HTML 3.0. I may as well cater to the Amaya crowd.
On a completely unrelated note, this Web site works beautifully in Lynx.

Damn the Man!
Save the Empire!
Aw, I liked the original design too. Well, it’s not like I visit for this site’s looks.
Nice design, I liked.
Down with IE, up the Opera!
It’s just a slightly modified version of the Hemingway theme. Wanted something a little different, but not too different. Took a lot of design ideas from some other Hemingway-based pages.
I like the old design too, but it was showing its age. I think that this one will be better in the long run.
This is probably one of the few pages out there that looks “best” under Linux.
i am using IE 6 and the site is working perfectly
My new website won’t support IE at all, yay
Yay for Opera BTW. The submit button doesn’t have the best placement, though.
Stefan: That’s really surprising, but pleasant news. I abused a lot of negative margins in the page’s CSS, and Internet Explorer has a tendency to not respect such positioning.
Kitsune_Sniper reported minor errors in Internet Explorer 7.0 where text was being snipped off, but I fixed that with a little trial and error. Perhaps the fixes for IE7 have also made it work in IE6.
Either way, supporting Internet Explorer 6 was not on the agenda. If it does work, then all the better.
