Sigh …
If you’re in the mood for seeing some totally ignorant zealots make asses of themselves, you might like reading this discussion.
Sometimes it amazes me how utterly clueless most English speakers are about the non-English speaking world. It’s incredibly obvious none of these people have ever been on the other side of the fence to see just how much the US hides from them. I don’t think you’ll find anywhere where nothing is censored except the Principality of Sealand.
China makes sites vanish. Here, the FBI busts in, ransacks the building, smashes all the servers and puts whoever is running it in jail. Or, they set up a carnivore box to watch where users on a given ISP are going, then audit it to bust people for what they’re viewing. This is just as much censorship as clicking something and finding dead links that couldn’t make it past The Great Firewall.
Moreover, Google isn’t some moral pillar, it’s a search engine. Which means it makes money. If it didn’t make money, it wouldn’t exist. Making money means running a business, and you run the business however you have to in whichever country you’re in. Period. They have to obey Chinese law in China.
You know, like how it’s illegal to sell copier devices from China in the USA because it violates US law. Oh my gosh! Yes, we have laws that restrict businesses from other countries too. Get over it.
I really hope Google censors out Slashdot at some point. That would just be too sweet.
